Torrox · Axarquía · Costa del Sol
Montse and Salvador's Guide
We're not a tourist guide. We're two people who've been living and enjoying this corner of Málaga for years. This is what we do, eat, and recommend.
The best beaches
Just 1 km from Casa Layda you'll find some of the most beautiful beaches on the Costa del Sol. Here are our three favourites:
The most popular
Playa de Ferrara
Soft sand, calm waters, and a promenade lined with terraces and beach bars. Perfect for families with children and the social heart of Torrox Costa.
Our favourite
Playa de Wilches
Small, peaceful, and utterly charming. Far less crowded than Ferrara, with a special magic all its own. Our go-to for a quiet swim.
What to see in the area
Nerja
The most famous town in the area – and for good reason. The Balcón de Europa, a beautiful old town, spectacular beaches, and the Caves of Nerja. Just 15 minutes away by car.
Frigiliana
Consistently voted one of Spain's most beautiful villages. Whitewashed streets, flowers around every corner, and breathtaking views over the Axarquía. A 20‑minute drive – and an absolute must.
Malaga City
The beating heart of the Costa del Sol. The Picasso Museum, the Alcazaba fortress, a revitalised port, and a food scene that will surprise you. 45 minutes away.
Granada & the Alhambra
An hour and a half's drive. Home to one of the world's most important monuments – the Alhambra. Book your tickets well in advance; they sell out weeks before.
Just 15 minutes from Casa Layda
The Nerja Caves
Declared a Site of Cultural Interest, the Nerja Caves are home to the world's largest stalactite and cave paintings over 42,000 years old.
Open every day of the year. General opening hours: 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM. In summer (June to September), they stay open until 7:00 PM. Admission also includes the Nerja Museum.
On Mondays, EU citizens can visit for free (limited capacity). We recommend booking your tickets online in advance to avoid the queues.
Hiking trails
The Axarquía is a paradise for hikers. From gentle family strolls to high‑mountain routes. Here are our favourites:
✦ El Acebuchal — Between Torrox, Cómpeta and Frigiliana. One of the most popular routes in the area, with spectacular views over all three villages.
✦ El Fuerte — Between Nerja and Frigiliana. A historic trail with remnants of fortifications and sweeping sea views.
✦ Loop from Restaurante Pavo Real — Torrox. Perfect for starting strong and finishing with a well‑earned lunch.
✦ Torrox to the old town — An urban route connecting Torrox Costa with the white village of Torrox. History and architecture at every turn.
✦ El Pico del Cielo — Nerja. For the more adventurous. A guaranteed reward at the summit.
✦ La Maroma — Several routes of varying difficulty to the highest peak in the Axarquía. For experienced mountain hikers only.
Where to eat – Montse and Salvador's favourites
We're not food critics. We're regulars. These are the places we keep coming back to:
🍺 El Tapeito — Torrox Costa
Our go-to tapas bar. Authentic local atmosphere and tapas that never disappoint.
🦐 El Pulguilla — Nerja
Seafood and fresh fish in one of Nerja's most beloved restaurants. Book ahead in high season.
🏖️ Chiringuito Ayo — Nerja
The most famous paella in the area, right on the beach. An experience you have to try at least once.
🍕 Italy Restaurante Pizzería — Torrox
In our opinion, the best pizzas in the area. No question.
🥩 La Farola — Torrox
The best choice for grilled meats. Generous portions and consistently good quality.
🥘 La Arrocería — Mezquitilla
Top‑tier paellas and rice dishes. A little further away, but well worth the trip.
🍽️ La Venta de Frigiliana
The best traditional Spanish food in the area. A great choice for a special dinner.
🍦 Heladería Buenavista — Torrox Costa
The best ice cream along the promenade. A must‑stop in summer.
💛 Special recommendation from Montse: For a real breakfast, look for María Jesús's churros and chocolate stall at Torrox's municipal market. Only those who know it realise what everyone else is missing.
Festivals, markets and events
Festivals
📅 October Fair — First weekend of October
Torrox's big celebration. Music, stalls, and an unbeatable atmosphere.
📅 Día de las Nieves — 5 August
The town's patron saint day. A celebration that blends religious tradition with lively festivity.
📅 Holy Week — March/April
We recommend the Holy Week processions in Málaga city, or the arrival of La Legión in Vélez-Málaga on Holy Thursday.
📅 Oktoberfest — Late September
Yes, Torrox has its own Oktoberfest – and it's very well done.
📅 Migas Day — Sunday before Christmas
A local food tradition you really have to experience at least once.
